Big Boy 4014 Minnesota 2019

About the Engine

The Union Pacific “Big Boy” class steam engines were some of the largest ever built in the world.  However, with the advent of diesel locomotives, after up to 18 years in operation, all were retired by 1959.

Then, in 2013, the original owner, Union Pacific Railroad, re-acquired locomotive #4014 and restored it to operating condition over the next 6 years.  In 2019, it embarked on the first of what is hoped to be many tours around the United States pulling heritage passenger cars..

About the Photos Seen Here

The photos here were taken in and around Saint Paul, MN and further north along the route the train took on its way to Duluth.  While 1.2 million pound steam locomotives are not my usual photo subjects, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to see it!  You can also pay via PayPal to see and purchase these, along with my other images.
